WHEN et la CONCORDANCE des TEMPS

When = Conjonction de subordination (seul emploi pour lequel le futur et le conditionnel sont impossibles) :
Dans une subordonnée commençant par une conjonction de temps (when, while, once, as soon as, as long as, whenever, by the time, the moment…), l’idée de futur est exprimée par un présent. Une telle subordonnée peut dépendre d’une principale au futur ou à l’impératif.

We will start when you are ready.
It will be dark when we get home.
We’ll go for a walk as soon as it stops raining.
I’ll remember it as long as I live.
By the time they are ready, it will be too late.
Come and see us whenever you like.
Let us know when you have finished.
We’ll play tennis if/when it stops raining.

Cette règle ne s’applique pas (et on peut donc employer le futur) dans les cas où when est :

1. Un adverbe interrogatif :
When will you be back?
I wonder when they will be back. (interrogative indirecte)
When did he buy a car?
Mais ne pas confondre
Tell me when you are ready (dis-moi quand tu seras prêt)
avec Tell me when you will be ready (dis-moi [maintenant, si tu le sais] quand tu seras prêt)

2. Une conjonction de coordination (la 2ème action ne dépend pas de la 1ère) :
We shall stay here until August 15th, when we shall leave for Dublin.
He was a sailor until 1980, when he bought a farm in New Zealand.

3. Un pronom relatif :
We are looking forward to the day when we shall be free.
The day will come when you will be sorry for it.

4. Dans la construction when (conjonction) + shall (auxiliaire à valeur de subjonctif) : should s’emploie parfois dans des subordonnées de temps après when, before et until (style littéraire, voire archaïque). Dans ce cas, on respecte la concordance des temps :
shall pour le futur, should pour le futur dans le passé :
We must be ready to do our duty when the time shall come.
